Monterey County Sheriff's OfficeA massive landslide has altered the iconic Big Sur coastline
The rockslide at Mud Creek took place about 48km south of Pfeiffer Canyon, meaning that two sections of the highway have now being shut down, Smith said.
A section of California's iconic coastal highway will likely remain closed for months after a massive rain-driven landslide that went into the Pacific Ocean, a state transportation official said on Wednesday. The highway is the main artery running through Big Sur, a picturesque stretch that is a major tourist attraction. The highway had already been closed as crews were working to fix damage from an earlier landslide; no injuries were reported.
"I think there's been slides this big, but I don't know that I've heard of any slides this big on Highway 1", Madonna said of the latest slide at Mud Creek.
No injuries or damage were reported, officials said.
"Typically when it rains for a few days, you can expect small slides that our maintenance crews can clean up in a few hours", Jim Shivers, a CalTrans spokesman, said by phone on Wednesday.
The area, which relies heavily on tourism, has been hit by several landslides since January that have caused temporary road closures.
At this time, the landslide stretches approximately a third of a mile, with some areas of Highway 1 believed to be buried by as much as 40 feet of mud, dirt, and stone. The new span is scheduled to open in September. But those wanting to get farther north or south would have to take an interior county road to US 101, some 40 miles inland.
After this most recent mudslide, the situation could become even more dire for restaurants in the area. The inn is offering packages ranging in price from $4,300 to $13,500, including helicopter fare and accommodations, and it's just a 20-minute hop over from the airport in Monterey. "They have a high end resort that's sitting there empty".
