Family Member Mourns After Mississippi Shooting That Killed 8

Suspect Willie Corey Godbolt told The Clarion-Ledger he meant to commit "suicide by cop" after a shooting rampage in Bogue Chitto and Brookhaven that left eight dead, including a Lincoln County deputy, two boys, his mother-in-law and other family members.

Godbolt showed up at Mitchell's home in the MS town of Bogue Chitto Saturday, demanding that his estranged wife give up their two children.

After the sheriff's deputy arrived at the house, Godbolt looked as if he was about to leave, then reached into his back pocket, pulled a gun and opened fire, Mitchell said.

Godbolt will be charged with one count of capital murder, seven counts first-degree murder and other crimes such as auto burglary and kidnapping, according to Mississippi Department of Public Safety Communication Director Warren Strain.

"My intention was to have God kill me". People embrace Sunday, May 28, 2017, outside a Bogue Chitto, Miss., house where several people were fatally shot during a house-to-house shooting rampage Saturday in Lincoln County, Miss.

At least seven hours elapsed between the first shootings and Godbolt's arrest near the final crime scene, in a subdivision of ranch houses.

Jordan was walking down the hall, talking on FaceTime with his girlfriend when the shooting started. The preliminary investigation indicates that Godbolt was either related to or an acquaintance of the victims, police said. Authorities said Godbolt fled and killed four more people at two other homes.

"My pain wasn't designed for him".

Caleb's 11-year-old brother, Austin Edwards, was also shot to death in that living room early Sunday. "A nightmare just come real", he said.

Strain says Godbolt's first appearance in court depends on when he is released from the hospital and the court's schedule.

Lincoln County Coroner Clay McMorris identified five of the victims as Barbara Mitchell, 55, Toccarra May, 35, Brenda May, 53, Ferral Burage, 45, and his wife Shelia Burage, 46. "I ran out of bullets", he said.

"When I walked in the house and saw my child lying there, I just thought he was sleeping", she said.

William Durr, 36, was responding to a domestic-violence call late Saturday when he was shot to death in Brookhaven, a south MS city surrounded by pine trees and rolling green pastures.

"They cost him his life", he said, apparently referring to the deputy.

It started when Jordan's mother, Tiffany, got a call from her best friend Sheena May, who said that Godbolt had come into her home and shot people. Suicide by cop was my intention.

Another clip shows Durr with Alex, a brown-haired boy puppet in a striped shirt, telling kids they could make people happy because, "You're fireflies, and you can light up for the world!"

"His character: top-notch", said Page Nelson, the school's elementary principal. Jordan Blackwell, 18, said they were gone to another town. "I'm sorry", Godbolt said, in reference to the deputy. "He was an extremely competitive young man who brought out the competitiveness in those around him. First thing in the morning", Blackwell said.

"We pastors know that a lot of times things turn out like this", he said.

Gov. Phil Bryant issued a statement on Facebook on Sunday, reading: "I ask all Mississippians to join Deborah and me in praying for those lost in Lincoln County".

He noted the "sacrifice" made by law enforcement officers to protect and serve their communities. "Too often, we lose one of our finest". I thank the law enforcement agencies involved for their hard work. "May the peace of the Almighty wash over those hurting after this senseless tragedy".
