Triumphant Zuma Says ANC Is United Against Opposition Bid For Power

President of South Africa Jacob Zuma faces a no confidence vote
However, as he has been accused of almost 800 charges of corruption, his tenure as president has become uncertain.
South African opposition has repeatedly accused the president of corruption and fraud.
Mr Zuma easily survived an impeachment vote in 2016 after South Africa's highest court ruled he had breached the constitution over government funds spent renovating his private home.
This would follow a turbulent period marred by the sacking of Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan in March and political attacks on the Reserve Bank of South Africa by senior members of the ANC said to be aligned with Zuma. Both Zuma and the Guptas have dismissed the accusations.
Speaker Baleka Mbeteannounced that 177 MPs voted in favour of the motion and 198 against it.
GRANITZ: The 75-year-old Zuma has been dogged by scandal and allegations of corruption during his time in office.
Tuesday's vote was however the first one that was held by secret ballot, putting members of the ruling party under less pressure to toe the party line.
ANC MPs who had spoken out against the President in the lead up to the vote had received death threats and were given police protection.
There, MPs of the governing party were, again, reminded of the party line - vote against the motion as the ANC could not support the opposition, which was its nemesis.
"I plead you. Let us put the people of South Africa first". DA leader Mmusi Maimane said on Tuesday. The ANC is expected to replace him as party leader at its meeting in December.
Demonstrators - for and against Zuma - had gathered outside the Cape Town parliament. He will however continue in the post of president till the next presidential elections that take place in 2019. Mr Zuma is backing his ex-wife (and a former African Union head), Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, as his replacement.
Mr Zuma has survived eight no-confidence votes during his eight years in power thanks to loyal voting by ANC lawmakers, but those votes were not secret. It is impossible: they can not. "Today, we either do what is best for our country or we turn our back on it", he said.
The ANC parliamentary party celebrated victory over what it described as an attempted "soft coup".
She further said the opposition's aim was to "sow seeds of chaos in society to ultimately grab power".
