Today's Google Doodle Honors Hip-Hop's Anniversary By Letting You DJ

Google celebrates the birth of hip-hop with an animated doodle that lets you DJ

The team that created the doodle had members that had worked with hip hop industry. Allowing his creatives juices to flow, the 18-year-old Jamaican-American played only instrumental or breaks sections of the music.

Lyon Cohen, YouTube's global head of music, said: "The progression of this culture and sound - from Kool Herc spinning James Brown breaks at a block party to Jay-Z, Kanye West, and Drake being some of the biggest forces in music 44 years later - is something that few people at that first party could have anticipated". During these "breaks" his friend Coke La Rock hyped up the crowd with a microphone.

Google creates turntables for its first hip-hop Doodle, which involved such talents as animator-musician Kevin Burke, designer-animator Hélène Leroux and engineering lead David Lu.

If you want to know how to be a DJ on Google, you will have to click the play button. Here users may select samples of classic songs from famous artists like Billy Squire, The Isley Brothers, Betty Wright and George Clinton.

When you've picked your songs, you can customise the mix using the slider controls.

If you have also spent a portion of your day twiddling with Google's latest sick Doodle then you're not alone because they just keep getting better and better.

In 1998, the search engine founders Larry and Sergey drew a stick figure behind the second "o" of Google as a message to that they were out of office at the Burning Man festival and with that, Google Doodles were born. You can sync the records and samples yourself, or let Google auto do it for you.
