A house in Sunderland has been destroyed this morning after a huge blast.

Pictures on social media show what appears to be half of a semi-detached house which has been completely destroyed.

Supt Steve Hartley, from Northumbria Police, said: "Thankfully she was OK and taken to a local hospital".

She wrote: "There must be a God somewhere".

A woman was rescued from the wreckage, treated for burns and rushed to Newcastle Royal Victoria Infirmary in a serious but stable condition.

People living in Rosslyn Avenue praised the rapid response by the emergency services.

Emergency services were called to an address in Rosslyn Avenue in Ryhope at about 08:50 BST.

Shocked residents gathered at the edge of the cordon, as the full extent of the damage began to sink in. The force said everyone has been accounted for and it is not linked to terrorism.

Nearby Ryhope Community Centre was opened for those affected by the blast which happened at about 8.50am.

Tyne and Wear fire service said: "We have 5 appliances, a number of officers and specialist units in attendance at the incident in #Rosslyn avenue".

They included an operational support unit and a dog trained to search for injured people.

The Great North Air Ambulance Service said its crew members accompanied a patient in her 50s to hospital when she was driven by paramedics.

Sean Hughes, 40, heard the explosion over a mile away.
