Chandigarh women reclaim Geri route
A CCTV camera footage showing the two accused, Vikas Barala and his accomplice Ashish, buying liquor from an outlet in Sector 9 Chandigarh has surfaced in the high profile Varnika Kundu stalking and attempted abduction case.
Barala and his friend and co-accused Ashish Kumar were earlier sent to judicial cutsody for two days.
After massive outrage on streets and in the Parliament, the accused appeared before a Chandigarh court on Thursday.
However, Subhash Barala refuted the claims of pressurizing or influencing the police in the case. The defense counsel said that the accused were not guilty since no offence has been committed.
Vikas and Ashish were earlier been arrested on August 5 on the complaint of the victim - daughter of an IAS officer, who had accused them of chasing her vehicle and trying to kidnap her.
The duo had been earlier remanded in police custody for two days till August 12. They were sent to jail as Chandigarh Police did not seek their police remand. But they were released later on bail.
Under 160 Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) and the case has been filed against Barala under Section 354D (stalking), 341 (wrongful restraint), 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and 185 MV Act (rash driving), the summon was issued to the duo. Now, police have taken mobile location data of the accused and victim at the time the alleged crime took place for evidence, said the sources. He further stated that, Varnika "is like my daughter" and assured action against his son.
