Department of Agriculture says no eggs contaminated following European Union scare

The European Commission on Friday said that fifteen European Union (EU) countries plus Hong Kong and Switzerland have received eggs contaminated with the pesticide fipronil.

In a statement earlier this week, Brussels said that eggs contaminated with the harmful chemical Fipronil might have been sold in some seven countries.

Almost 5 billion of Germany's imported eggs came from the Netherlands, the country at the center of the ongoing scandal.

"Samples analysed in the Netherlands show traces of fipronil in the eggs, but not as a health hazard", the agency said.

It is believed that Fipronil, used to kill fleas, lice, ticks, roaches and mites, was inadvertently mixed with a cleaning product routinely used in chicken coops.

All of the food businesses concerned have reportedly been contacted and any remaining products have been removed from sale.

The owner said his Spanish eggs had already been checked for chemicals, but that the U.S. and Hong Kong offerings may be "safer".

The substance can damage people's kidneys, liver and thyroid glands if eaten in large quantities. It was the first discovery of contaminated egg product in eastern Europe since the scandal erupted.

Local authorities arrested two men in relation to the fipronil use Thursday, according to the Dutch public prosecutor.

Close to 700,000 eggs have been distributed to the United Kingdom from Dutch farms that are believed to be contaminated with risky insecticide.

He also called for countries in Europe to work together to learn from the problem amid raised tensions between Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany over who was at fault.

Denmark's food safety authority said that over twenty tonnes of contaminated eggs have already been sold in the country, making it the tenth country affected by the egg scandal after Romania and Luxembourg reported finding contaminated products.

Around 700,000 affected eggs could have been shipped to the United Kingdom, but the Food Standards Agency (FSA) said it was very unlikely that there was a risk to public health.

"The levels of actual contamination do not pose any risks for consumers", it said, citing an investigation by France's health and safety agency that pointed to "very low" risks.
