Nixa native, UMKC product Frerichs part of gold-silver finish for US in London
Emma Coburn and Courtney Frerichs stunned the World Championships by winning gold and silver in a dramatic women's 3,000 metres steeplechase here Friday, the first Americans to get medals in the event.
Coburn, whose bronze past year was the first medal of any color at the Olympics for an American woman in the event, credited an increased emphasis on having support and medical staff on hand at the biggest events, along with training differences.
Darya Klishina of Russian Federation, competing as a neutral athlete because of her country's doping suspension, took silver with a jump of 7 meters (22-11½), and defending champion Tianna Bartoletta added an American medal with bronze.
It didn't happen. Kenya's Hyvin Jepkemoi took bronze and Chepkoech finished fourth. "The whole race I just felt strong and controlled and powerful and waiting and waiting for it to feel bad, and it never did". "It is pretty unbelievable to get a championship record", she added.
Coburn grabbed the gold in a championship-record of 9 minutes, 2.58 seconds.
There was no doubt that Coburn was a potential medal contender heading into the final, though both her and Frerichs remained calm and composed throughout to secure a surprising American 1-2 in London.
The duo came into the race as the biggest threats to Schippers and so it proved as Ta Lou ran the Dutchwoman close but was forced to settle for an agonising silver yet again in 22.08.
Her moment of absent mindedness meant she had to backtrack.
"I feel like I am in a dream".
"I was expecting a challenge from when I hit the front". Myself and Emma just worked hard and dealt with whatever tactics the African athletes threw at us.
"I just expected the others to finish quickly, so I just kept pushing to make sure I got that gold that I wanted so much". "Evan (Jager) and I have been in the mix the last couple of years". She just 24 years old, won an NCAA title in 2016 as a member of the New Mexico Lobos and the qualified for the Olympics, where she finished 11th in the final.
