Trump needs to spend his break repairing a broken relationship with Congress
But he pointed to some unreported results of the poll as "troublesome:" almost half of Republicans (47 percent) believe that Trump won the popular vote, while 68% believe millions of illegal immigrants voted, and 73% said that voter fraud happens somewhat or very often.
Only 24% of Americans said they approved of the way the Republican leaders in Congress are handling their jobs.
"Despite their party controlling both chambers of Congress, only one in six Republicans (16%) approve of the job Congress is doing, the lowest yet in 2017". Seven in 10 say they disapprove of Republican leaders in the legislature.
Despite record job growth, the Dow over 22,000, illegal immigration down 70 percent and massive deregulation, the mainstream media still reports that Donald Trump's presidency is a failure.
Republicans themselves are evenly split 44% to 44% on whether the GOP-led Congress has been a success or failure so far. "At a minimum, they show that a substantial number of Republicans are amenable to violations of democratic norms that are more flagrant than what is typically proposed (or studied)".
A plurality of Americans (38%) say disagreement among Republicans in Congress is the main reason for the lack of major legislation so far this term, while a quarter each blame a lack of leadership from President Trump (26%) and opposition from Democrats (25%).
Congress is now on its August recess without any major legislative achievement.
Going forward, most respondents said they wanted Trump and the Republicans to abandon their attempts to repeal ObamaCare and instead focus on shoring up the healthcare markets and stabilizing the law. A majority (56%) say it's not likely that Republicans will be successful in passing their own health care bill, the first time that figure has topped 50% in CNN polling.
This month's survey again finds more of the public holding a favorable view of the Affordable Care Act than an unfavorable one (52% vs. 39%).
The poll was "based on telephone interviews conducted August 2-6, 2017, with a random sample of 1,017 adults, aged 18 and older, living in all 50 US states and the District of Columbia". The margin of error is 4 percentage points with a 95-percent confidence level.
