US military denies airstrike killed civilians in Afghanistan

US-led airstrike kills 16 civilians in eastern Afghanistan

A spokesman for the US military said that the Pentagon was aware of the reports but would not immediately comment.

Afghan officials today confirmed that United States airstrikes targeted and killed at least 16 civilians, mostly women, and children, in the eastern Nangarhar Province, targeting the civilians as they tried to flee out of an ISIS-held district where heavy fighting has been ongoing.

Hajji Saz Wali, the governor of Haska Meena, said the victims included women and children.

The former Afghan President Hamid Karzai reacted at the alleged civilian deaths in an airstrike of the USA forces in Afghanistan.

"The militants were observed loading weapons into a vehicle and were under surveillance until the vehicle was destroyed by an airstrike", Purtiman said.

This is the second strike in the last few weeks in the district which killed civilians.

Attaullah Khogyani, spokesman for the governor of Nangarhar, confirmed that casualties had occurred in the area but said that officials would release details later. "The strike was conducted in the middle of open terrain".

Several districts of Nangarhar are infested with IS militants, US and Afghan officials said.

"In the strike, five insurgents were killed and two others were wounded. But, we have appointed a delegation to investigate if civilians are killed". In June، at least three Afghan border police officers were killed in USA airstrikes in Helmand province.

He reiterated that US forces take all allegations of civilian casualties seriously and review each case fully, as well as take precautions in a way to minimize harm to Afghan civilians. It came after a USA air strike in Sangin killed at least 18 civilians, mostly women and children, in February. Civilian deaths are at an all-time high in Afghanistan.
