Jet Propulsion Laboratory will provide NASA eclipse glasses for the viewing.
The first total eclipse of the sun to be seen in the continental United States in 38 years is almost here. Prior to that, the last eclipse to traverse from coast to coast was June 8, 1918.
The solar eclipse is August 21. In Fairfax County the moon will begin to cover the sun at 1:17 p.m. and the eclipse will end at 4:01 p.m.
At Lake Mead, 71 percent of the sun will be eclipsed.
Protect your eyes from damage when viewing the solar eclipse
While there are several ways to observe an eclipse, one of the more popular ways to do so is by using a pair of solar eclipse glasses.
Guests will be able to make pinhole projectors, try out science experiments, listen to a live band from the School of Rock and participate in other activities in the park. Looking at the sun directly, even just the sliver of sun visible before the total eclipse, can cause permanent eye damage.
Regular sunglasses do not protect your eyes from the damaging rays of an eclipse, and looking through the lens of a camera, binoculars or a telescope puts your vision at risk.
There will be an indoor projection of the images from a telescope with a solar filter.
If you miss this one, the next solar eclipse visible from the United States will be on April 8, 2024.
