Bills deal Sammy Watkins, acquire Jordan Matthews in separate deals
In another blockbuster move, the Bills have acquired Jordan Matthews and a 2018 third-round draft pick from the Eagles in exchange for cornerback Ronald Darby.
Matthews caught three passes on the drive; he was the receiver Wentz was most comfortable with, the one Wentz looked for when he was dodging pass-rushers, as was frequently the case during the 10 snaps the QB played in Thursday's exhibition.
Besides, if the Eagles are developing offensively around free agents Torrey Smith and Alshon Jeffery, there should be less emphasis on the role of the slot receiver. The third year corner spent much of his first two years as a starter with the Bills and is expected to step into the starting lineup in Philadelphia.
About the same time the Bills were trading away their No. 4 overall pick from 2013 (Sammy Watkins), they were also working on replacing him.
"We weren't picking up the phone and calling teams on Jordan because of his value to our team", Roseman added. Praise for Matthews in this camp has been sparing. If Sidney Jones is able to fully come back from his Achilles' injury, the Eagles could have a solid corner duo for years to come. The front office won't have to worry about re-signing Darby until 2019, and the Eagles will have a better idea if he's the player who was Pro Football Focus' defensive rookie of the year in 2015 or the one who struggled last year.
"Our priority was sorting out the cornerback position", Roseman said.
Roseman was asked about the preceding rumors regarding Matthews's future with the team, to which he said that the team had not been in any discussions until the rumors started, at which point teams began calling the Eagles about their slot receiver to find out more. This was probably window dressing to lessen the fallout over trading a popular player, but maybe Roseman does have a distant scenario in mind in which nobody is willing to pay Matthews what the receiver thinks he is worth. The Vanderbilt product was a second-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.
Thanks for your continued support.
