Defense Secretary Jim Mattis
Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, voicing support Wednesday for continued diplomatic talks with North Korea, declined to discuss specifics with reporters regarding the nuclear threat posed by Pyongyang, but added that a "military solution" does exist in the event one is needed.
Mattis made the remarks to reporters at an event in California on Thursday, adding that the US prefers a diplomatic approach to the North Korean threat.
And while Mattis warnedon Wednesday that North Korea would be "grossly overmatched" by the US and its allies if a military conflict were to break out, some senior administration officials have provided a counterpoint to the President's more inflammatory rhetoric.
Trump has stated that he is prepared to engage in all-out war if North Korea launches its missiles. "[Kim] has been very threatening beyond a normal state and as I said they will be met with fire and fury and frankly power the likes of which this world has never seen before".
During a brief scheduled stop in Guam, Tillerson suggested Trump's rhetoric is a strategy he is using as head of state to communicate clearly with Kim.
"It's [North Korea's] aligning the United Nations in very serious sanctions, and I would just tell you that it did not happen by accident", Mattis said.
Gorka said that the idea that the Secretary of State should "discuss military matters is simply nonsensical", and also appeared to suggest that the US was considering military options against North Korea.
"While our State Department is making every effort to resolve this global threat through diplomatic means, it must be noted that the combined allied militaries now possess the most precise, rehearsed and robust defensive and offensive capabilities on Earth", Mattis said.
Guam is home to Anderson Air Force Base, from which two U.S. B-1B bombers deployed on a mission with the South Korean and Japanese air forces on Monday.
"The United States and our allies have the demonstrated capabilities and unquestionable commitment to defend ourselves from an attack", the statement said.
