A close relative of former Congress leader Shankersinh Vaghela - who resigned from the party recently and voted against Patel in Tuesday's election - Rajput, sources say, had been fielded in the RS race at the behest of Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, both of whom have left amply displayed their unwillingness to cede even an inch of political space for the Congress party. Last night, it suspended its Rajya Sabha member Ali Anwar Ansari from the parliamentary party for attending a meeting of Opposition parties convened by Congress president Sonia Gandhi. Gandhi chose to convene the meet at the Constitution Club of India on Friday, as it is the last day of Monsoon Session of the Parliament.
The replacement comes a day after Bihar Chief Minister and JD (U) chief Nitish Kumar virtually shut the door on any reconciliation with rebel leader Sharad Yadav, saying he is free to take any decision as the alliance with the BJP had the entire partys nod.
