A close relative of former Congress leader Shankersinh Vaghela - who resigned from the party recently and voted against Patel in Tuesday's election - Rajput, sources say, had been fielded in the RS race at the behest of Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, both of whom have left amply displayed their unwillingness to cede even an inch of political space for the Congress party. Last night, it suspended its Rajya Sabha member Ali Anwar Ansari from the parliamentary party for attending a meeting of Opposition parties convened by Congress president Sonia Gandhi. Gandhi chose to convene the meet at the Constitution Club of India on Friday, as it is the last day of Monsoon Session of the Parliament.

The replacement comes a day after Bihar Chief Minister and JD (U) chief Nitish Kumar virtually shut the door on any reconciliation with rebel leader Sharad Yadav, saying he is free to take any decision as the alliance with the BJP had the entire partys nod.

Its leader in the Rajya Sabha Sharad Yadav has rebelled against the alliance with the BJP but apparently does not enjoy much support among other party's lawmakers. Raising a banner of revolt against Nitish's decision to partner with the BJP once again, Yadav announced a three-day yatra in Bihar beginning from Thursday to assess mood of the people in the state.

"Nitish Kumar does not belong to (JD (U)) anymore, it is Sharad Yadav's now".

This came after the CBI registered a corruption case against RJD chief Lalu Yadav, his wife Rabri Devi and son Tejashwi Yadav on allegations of awarding the tender for development, maintenance and operation of hotels in Ranchi and Puri in 2006.

Asked whether JDU will join the Cabinet, a JDU leader said that such a decision is natural.

Senior JD (U) leader Sharad Yadav on Wednesday tweeted his congratulations to Congress leader Ahmed Patel, for winning the election to a Rajya Sabha Gujarat seat "in spite of toughest hurdles". But we will not be attending it, "he said".
