The department had said last month that the first mosquitoes of the year had tested positive for the eastern equine encephalitis virus.

Division of Fish and Wildlife Mosquito Control Section Administrator Dr. William Meredith says Mosquito Control will increase its mosquito population monitoring activities in targeted areas and continue to take appropriate control actions as warranted.

Hennink says the advice being given is the advice given at any time when mosquitoes are prevalent.

Some general tips: wear mosquito repellant or long clothing if you're outside; and prevent mosquitos near your home by removing any standing water and clearing weeds.

They were found two to three weeks ago. The spraying will begin at dusk, weather permitting, and be administered from one of the county's West Nile program trucks.

While most people with the virus will experience mild or no symptoms, some can develop severe symptoms including high fever, headache, neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors, convulsions, muscle weakness, vision loss, numbness and paralysis, according to Tomarken. "So most people are asymptomatic", Holcombe said. During 2016, 13 cases of West Nile virus infection were reported among Wisconsin residents. However, most reported becoming ill with West Nile virus in August and September.
