Police have charged a 20-year-old man with second-degree murder after a auto was driven into a crowd protesting against a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

A 32-year-old woman died when a vehicle was driven into the crowd during the anti-rally protest earlier today.

Thomas told reporters a 32-year-old woman was killed while she was crossing the street.

The Washington Post reported that the silver 2010 Dodge Challenger involved in the crash was registered to Fields. Altogether 35 people were treated.

Officials said the deaths of two people in a helicopter crash near Charlottesville, Virginia, have been linked to a violent white nationalist rally earlier in the day.

The protest was supposed to show unhappiness with the decision of the town to remove a statute of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee, but it became a gathering point for white supremacists around the country.

Several hundred protesters were marching when the auto appeared to deliberately drive into a group of them, The Associated Press reported. As of Saturday evening, Angela Taylor, a spokeswoman for the University of Virginia Medical Center, said five people from the crash were in critical condition, four in serious condition, six in fair condition and four in good condition.

The Associated Press reported that the driver has been arrested.

This story is breaking and will be updated.
