Breaking the Precedents, Facebook Quietly Launched an App in China
Facebook has found a new way to enter China: secretly launching an app under a different name.
Colorful Balloons appears to mimic the look and feel of Facebook'sMoments app, which allows users to share photos with friends and family members. But according to The New YorkTimes, Facebook might have found a subtle workaround to penetrating the country.
As writes the edition, a hidden and anonymous a major foreign technology company in China is unprecedented. Even Colorful Balloons relies heavily on Chinese social platform WeChat to function. Facebook recently saw it app WhatsApp shutdown in China this summer. Facebook has long eyed China's more than 700 million internet users, who now use homegrown social networks including We-Chat. Released by a company named Youge Internet Technology, Colorful Balloons has not been reported in any form since The Times picked it up, and there's fear that China might now take notice and implement appropriate action.
The easy access to Facebook using its app "Colorful Balloons" is made possible by none other than one of China's separate local companies.
In a statement to the Times, Facebook did not confirm or deny its involvement with Colorful Balloons. "We have long said that we are interested in China, and are spending time understanding and learning more about the country in different ways", a spokesperson says.
