Giroud confirms Arsenal stay after opening-day victor

13 August 2017, 10:28 | Anna Jefferson

Who would lead the race for highest goal scorer in the Premier League

Alexis Sanchez has long-announced his world class but Arsene Wenger still lacks players to take hold of a title race and may not hold onto the Chile striker for much longer

It was one of the most unforgettable opening day matches in recent memory as Arsenal beat Leicester City 4-3 at the Emirates Stadium.

The subs paid off, with Ramsey scoring in the 83rd minute to make it 3-3 and Giroud heading in off the post two minutes later to win a thrilling encounter for Arsenal.

Sead Kolasinac marked his debut with a goal in the Community Shield and forced Kasper Schmeichel into a smart save here with a driven shot from just inside the box, but the Gunners again fell behind to Vardy's strike.

Arsene Wenger's inspired changes paid dividends, though, as Ramsey levelled things up and then two minutes later Giroud turned the game completely on its head as Arsenal ended their opening-game hoodoo. "You know, I must say I opened the door for him at some stage because I know that it's important for him to play".

"I think when teams make substitutions from the corners, it can cause a bit of confusion".

"He made a decision to stay and it was one of the great days of recent weeks for me". It was a relief for me he chose to stay.

"We kept going and the spirit of the team was absolutely outstanding", said Wenger. "Giroud in his prime is at the top of his game".

Arsenal shipped three goals but were without arguably three of their first-choice defenders as Per Mertesacker, Laurent Koscielny and Shkodran Mustafi all sat out due to a combination of fitness and suspension.

"With the third goal, also after a corner, (Jamie) Vardy's header was nice, but we were there and we had enough time to find our place".

"This has happened to us the last three seasons here".

Arsenal looked very strong at times and without Champions League football, could finally win a Premier League title for the first time in more than a decade.

"We have to be positive as it's the first game".

Arsenal travel to Stoke for their next Premier League fixture before meeting Liverpool at Anfield to end September. As a game is in 90, that would guarantee you a goal.

In a separate pitch-side interview he added: "I love Giroud the player".

Wenger said he had given the former Montpellier man the chance to leave but is delighted he opted to stay put. We encourage him to do that.
