Jeter poised to take the next step

Derek Jeter

Jeter's team reportedly consists of about 16 investors with varying stakes in the team, with the largest investment coming from NY businessman and venture capitalist Bruce Sherman.

Jeter and Jordan (along with NY businessman Bill Sherman) are a part of the 16 investors looking to purchase MLB's Miami Marlins. The group finalized a $1.2 billion purchase agreement with Loria on Friday and submitted it to the Major League Baseball office. Bush. Jeb! and Jeter were originally in on an effort to buy the team together, but that attempt fell apart in a power struggle when Jeb! realized that Jeter wanted to run the business and baseball sides of the franchise. In addition to Jeter, the ownership group has an athletic dimension thanks to a stake from Michael Jordan, who invested an unknown amount of money with the group. Several groups were interested, but the Jeter-Sherman team beat out two other rivals in the final weeks of negotiations. They'll discuss the Marlins next week in Chicago at a meeting but aren't likely to vote on the matter for another few weeks.

According to the Miami Herald Jeter is contributing around $25 million to the purchase and is being handed the keys to the franchise.

The Marlins were sold for $1.2 billion by owner Jeffrey Loria.
