Meteor shower visible this weekend
13 August 2017, 04:37 | Devin Moran
It's going to shower meteors Aug. 12
The meteors, mostly no bigger than a grain of sand, burn up as they hit the atmosphere at 58 kilometres (36 miles) per second to produce a shooting stream of light in the sky. The event started with a talk and presentation by DAG CEO Hasan Al Hariri, where he talked about the science behind Persied Meteor Shower, how to observe the showers and how any person can take pictures with an ordinary camera. It last passed near Earth during its orbit around the sun in 1992, and the next time will be in 2126. The Perseids can be seen from the end of July with one meteor an hour crossing the skies.
According to EarthSky, you'll be able to see the Perseid's through sunrise on August 19th but peak viewing occurs this weekend.
With only a few clouds in the forecast tonight, some of us could see a few meteors streaking across the Valley.
This year, as many as two of the streaking flashes of light could be visible every minute given a good location away from built up areas and clear skies. You will also want to be patient.
The Perseid meteor shower hits its peak this weekend in North America, with the best views available Friday and Saturday nights, but the bright moon, which turned full on Monday, is obscuring numerous fainter Perseids from view. Tonight between 9 pm and the early hours of tomorrow are when the best of the showers can be seen.
