Bryan Murray

Ottawa Senators Former Coach and General Manager Bryan Murray addresses the crowd after being inducted into the Ottawa Senators Ring of Honour before National Hockey League action between the Washington Capitals and Ottawa Senators on January 24, 2017, at Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa, ON, Canada.

Murray, 74, compiled over 600 wins as a coach for the Ottawa Senators, Washington Capitals, Detroit Red Wings, Florida Panthers and Anaheim Ducks.

Murray coached the Senators to the 2007 Stanley Cup Final, losing to the Ducks in five games.

"Bryan Murray's strength and character were reflected in the teams he coached and the teams he built over decades of front office excellence".

Murray served in the dual role of coach and GM for three seasons in Detroit before spending one more year as GM after Bowman became coach. "The GM part of it just came out of coaching". Murray began his adult life as a gym teacher, and that translated well to coaching. There are a lot of really good coaches and there are a lot of really good scouts.

Murray took over as head coach and general manager for the Red Wings in 1990-91, serving as general manager for the first four seasons of the Red Wings' franchise-record 25-straight postseason berths. Murray made the playoffs in 12 of his 13 full seasons as head coach.

Murray stepped down as the team's GM previous year to battle the disease, becoming a senior hockey advisor for the Senators.

When Fletcher worked for Murray in 2003 with the Anaheim Ducks, along with Tim Murray, they had a debate about a player with the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League.

Trading barbs with referees was a particular habit of Murray's, though it had a objective. They had just one victory when he took over.

Tributes to Murray poured out on Twitter after his death was announced.

The Red Wings organization would like to extend its deepest condolences to the Ottawa Senators organization and all of Murray's family and friends during this most hard time.

RIP Bryan Murray, you will be missed. Murray had been battling with colon cancer for the past two and a half years. "From that standpoint, he was tremendous. Touched a lot of lives". He was the team's eighth coach in eight seasons.

Even opponents and rivals respected Murray, who said in 2014 he felt bad that he couldn't respond to colleagues' messages about his cancer diagnosis fast enough. "While his warmth and dry sense of humor were always evident, they were accompanied by the fiery competitiveness and determination that were his trademarks".
