Alexander Zverev blows away Federer for Rogers Cup
The Swiss star reached the championship match with a 6-3, 7-6 (5) victory over Dutchman Robin Haase in Saturday's semifinal matchup.
Bautista Agut, seeded 12th, fought off a match point to force a tiebreaker. The victories, and the shaggy-haired youngster's style and skill on the court, announced his presence not only to Canadian fans but to the tennis world.
Federer has a 5-0 record in tournament finals this season and has already pocketed two Masters 1000 titles (Miami and Indian Wells) along with Grand Slam wins in Melbourne and London.
"I mean, I go from being not known to being so known in the tennis world, in Canada in general".
Federer hammered five aces, made just two double faults and won 81% of his first serve points in the 68-minute centre court match.
In Saturday's semifinal, Shapovalov will meet the victor of Friday's late match between fourth-seeded German Alexander Zverev and Kevin Anderson of South Africa.
Federer reached his sixth final of the year, and will be seeking a sixth win.
It was an even contest in the first set, Shapovalov and Zverev going toe-to-toe until the ninth game.
The tension was palpable as both players sought to make a bit of history in their careers, and it looked as if Schwartzman would make a slow start again as he did against Donaldson.
That said, Stephens did win the most recent clash (New Zealand in 2016) and should have a formula in mind to frustrate Wozniacki with a spot in the finals on the line.
"Ever since I came on Tour, I just feel like you go out there, try your best", he added.
Shapovalov put Mannarino in trouble with a big serve at 30-30, but he rushed an overhead to give the Frenchman the break point.
"That's going to not change with Rafa going out". He saved two match points in a 16-point final game with Zverev serving for the match before the German finally finished off the upstart to notch his 45th win of 2017. "I think it really shows how I've improved mentally, along with just finding my game at the right moments".
"If I don't save those match points in the first match, there's no chance of being here". I wished he won as well because it would have done much more for his career than for me. Haase said it was hard for both players after playing tough three-set matches against seeded players earlier in the week.
Zverev has now won his last 9 matches after winning Washington last week, and 10 straight in Masters events following that Rome title.
Later in the afternoon, Haase secured his place in the quarter-finals with a win of 7-6 (3), 4-6 and 6-1, at the expense of Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, the seventh favorite of the event.
