Newcastle vs Stoke: Confirmed Line-ups – Rising star fails to make squad, Mbemba returns

The Newcastle captain ensured that Rafa Benitez's absence from the Liberty Stadium was not keenly felt

It was the ideal way for Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez, recovered from a post-operation infection, to celebrate his return to the dugout after he missed Lascelles scoring the victor at Swansea last weekend.

Newcastle made it three wins on the bounce in the English Premier League as they saw off Stoke City 2-1 on match day five.

Newcastle United welcome Stoke City to St James' Park on Saturday for their 15:00 GMT Premier League clash.

After Xherdan Shaqiri cancelled out Christian Atsu's opener, it was left to defender Lascelles to again prove the match-winner for Newcastle.

Hughes was left ruing Stoke's missed chances, with Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting firing over from close range before Mame Biram Diouf sent a header wide in injury time.

"We're disappointed because we came into the game in good form".

"What is important for us was to start winning and now it is to keep the momentum", the Spaniard told BBC 5 Live.

"It's about us learning and understanding when we play a team who will sit back".

"We're doing okay after a tough period of fixtures".

Benitez definitely goes all the way to get the best out of his team behind the scene, and skipper Jamaal Lascelles has revealed yet another way the boss gets his men firing on all cylinders.

Atsu will be looking to add to his goal tally when Newcastle United take a trip to the Falmer Stadium to take on Brighton and Hove Albion on September 24 in their next game. "We have a game in the League Cup in midweek and Chelsea at our place, so they keep coming thick and fast".
