Six people are dead after Hurricane Irma knocked out air conditioning at a nursing home in Hollywood, Florida, according to ABC affiliate WPLG.

His visit came a day after police in the Florida town of Hollywood launched an investigation into the deaths of eight patients at a nursing home.

"It s a sad event", said Tomas Sanchez, the police chief in Hollywood, the city north of Miami where the retirement facility is located.

"The Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills has evacuated this morning due to a prolonged power failure to the transformer which powered the facility's air conditioning system as a result of the hurricane".

At least 13 other people were killed in Florida, four in SC and two more in Georgia. "It is clear that this facility can not be responsible for Florida's vulnerable patients, and therefore the state will stop them from providing care".

While Southeast Texas took the brunt of Harvey's wrath, Hurricane Irma's destruction was more widespread, causing damage in the Caribbean and across the Florida peninsula. All other Keys residents can return home Sunday morning at sunrise, he said.

Irma hit southwest Florida on Sunday morning as a unsafe Category 4 hurricane, the second-highest level on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale. So as a precaution we're moving everybody over so they'll be more comfortable. And apparently the facility lost some but not all of its power after Hurricane Irma.

And now we're learning new details about the death of eight senior citizens at a sweltering nursing home there.

"People are just absolutely shocked that someone in the staff would not know enough that a frail, elderly person is dying of heat exhaustion and would at least know to dial 911. this is what is inexcusable", Nelson said.

The rehab center's administrator, Jorge Carballo, said the home "is cooperating fully with relevant authorities to investigate the circumstances that led to this unfortunate and tragic outcome".

New drone video out of Florida captured an aerial view of the devastation wrought by Hurricane Irma in the Sunshine State. Miami's Mike Carvelli, whose mother is at the facility, said his brother was there earlier this week and found it "a little warm, but not uncomfortable" and there were portable air conditioning units in use.

Had they had other financial means, Mitchell says, the family would have taken Wilson out of the rehabilitation center long ago if it weren't for their insurance and the inability to choose where they wanted to go. Meanwhile, an estimated 13,000 people remained in shelters in Florida after the storm destroyed homes and rendered return impossible.

State investigators from the Florida Office of Attorney General were also at the scene, city officials said in a statement. He said he's been calling Florida Power & Light for days to get it fixed. There have also been some statements by nursing home groups and regulators and even some government officials. "What do I know but I hope this man right here. runs for the Senate", he said.
