At least 37 people were killed in eastern Congo on Friday when Burundian refugees who were protesting their forced return to their crisis-hit country were fired upon by Congolese forces.

Sidikou says in a statement that the clashes erupted in Kamanyola in Congo's South Kivu province when Burundian refugees and asylum-seekers protested the expulsion of four of their countrymen from Congo.

The president of a group representing Burundians who have fled the country, Gratien Rukindikiza, said he feared the situation could slide into a "genocide".

Boji, who had put the toll at 34 dead earlier - including a Congolese soldier - said troops tried to disperse the refugees by "firing in the air but were overwhelmed" when the group responded by throwing stones.

"So far, we have counted 31 dead and at least 105 injured, 15 of them seriously", the refugee said.

Residents in the area tell The Associated Press the killings occurred after some Burundian refugees went to the bureau of intelligence in Kamanyola to inquire about four detained refugees.

Burundi's foreign minister, Alain-Aime Nyamitwe, on Twitter described the incident as a "shooting" and said "explanations are needed". Many fled political violence in 2015.

Around 36,000 are in DR Congo, mainly in the overcrowded camp of Lusenda, in the east, or several transit camps.

According to he BBC, the United Nations has called for an investigation into exactly what happened.
