Harry Redknapp was sacked last night less than two hours after his Birmingham City side were beaten 3-1 at home by Preston.

Former Blues midfielder Lee Carsley has been placed in caretaker charge of the club, who now sit 23rd in the Championship table after their first eight league games, above only promoted Bolton Wanderers.

The 70-year-old manager joined Birmingham in April and helped them to avoid relegation with two wins from their final three games, but this season they have picked up only four points and sit 23rd in the standings.

Redknapp's assistant Kevin Bond has also left St Andrew's, but coaches Paul Groves and Kevin Hitchcock are set to stay.

But despite investing heavily in new players over the last few months, Birmingham have chose to axe the 70-year-old after six successive defeats, which sees them sitting second from bottom of the Championship.

And after today's 3-1 home defeat to Preston, Birmingham chose to sack the 70-year-old.

"The club has tonight parted company with manager Harry Redknapp", Birmingham said in a statement on their website.

There will be no further comment at this time.

However, despite signing 14 players during the summer transfer window, Redknapp has been unable to build upon his strong start.

Redknapp lasted just eight games this season before getting the boot. "I would love to be the manager to bring some success to Birmingham".

Lee Carsley has been appointed as caretaker manager, stepping up from his role with the development squad.
