Irma after-effects: 8 dead in Florida due to sweltering inside Nursing home

Death of 8 at Florida nursing home sounds alarms after Irma

There are still ten million people suffering from power failures in the city of Florida, Georgia and Carolinas.

The center said the hurricane knocked out a transformer that powered the air conditioning.

"We are devastated by these losses". Trump said that "the individual rate coming down will be substantial for the middle class", adding those are the Americans he aims to "take care of".

The woman with the camera then goes out into the hallway, where a naked woman who appears to be sleeping or unconscious is slouched on a gurney.

The recording shows the facility had power but workers were using an industrial-size drum fan sitting in front of two closed doors to move air through a hallway.

"The people who were working there worked hard to make a good outcome for our patients", she said. After additional crews arrived, three patients were found dead on the second floor of the nursing home, and several other patients were found to be in "varying degrees of medical distress", authorities said.

In all, 141 patients were evacuated from the facility.

By the afternoon, five more had died.

Authorities are now questioning how the conditions at the nursing home lasted for so long.

The governor's office said Friday that the calls were made to a cellphone controlled by Scott's office, but confirmed Saturday the nursing home called the governor's personal cellphone.

There is also a spot cooler, one of eight the state says was brought into the building as temperatures soared. There was no indication from state records of follow-up action on the issue, and no such deficiency was cited in fire-life safety inspection conducted a few months ago. The home was not entirely without power during and after Irma - but there wasn't enough to run the air conditioning, its managers say.

But the NAACP Florida State Conference put out a statement saying it "demands justice" for the deaths and called for steps such as increased oversight and enforcement efforts by the state Agency for Health Care Administration and the Florida Department of Children and Families.

"It is clear that this facility can not be responsible for Florida's vulnerable patients, and therefore the State will stop them from providing care", Scott said in a news release.

Late Wednesday, Florida Power & Light reported that almost 442,000 of its 1.1 million customers in Miami-Dade County were still without power. They are also more likely to take medication that affects body temperature. Moulder's mother was released from the hospital to a new nursing home. Florida has about 680 nursing homes providing shelter to around 73, 000 residents and out of them, around 150 facilities are now devoid of full power supply.

Statewide, 64 nursing homes were still waiting Thursday for full power, according to the Florida Health Care Association.

A spokeswoman for the nursing home said the center "is cooperating with all regulators and authorities as it relates to the ongoing investigation", said Alia Faraj-Johnson.

"We are there for you 100 percent", Trump said before donning gloves and helping to hand out sandwiches to local residents from a lunch line under a canopy. "Portable A/C units were being used in the facility, but the facility was excessively hot". Hurricane Irma has severely affected the power grids and power lines. The Center also had seven days of food, water, ice and other supplies, including gas for the generator.
