Pete Carroll: Richard Sherman 'looks like' he'll play Sunday
17 September 2017, 08:28 | Randall Craig
Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said RB Thomas Rawls is set to play in Seattle's home opener
"We'll see how he is tomorrow, and I'll wait until game day, but he looked really good", Carroll said in his final media availability before Seattle hosts the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday (1:25 p.m, KCPQ/13).
Sherman did not practice Wednesday or Thursday because of a hamstring injury, but returned as a limited participant Friday.
Carroll said the same for the whole team, noting that while the defense kept the Seahawks in the game it also couldn't stop Green Bay from running off the last 6:17 after Seattle closed to 17-9, or stop the Packers from converting 9 of 16 third downs.
Head coach Pete Carroll expressed his overall disappointment in the team's running game last week, saying, "Just disappointed that we didn't get the [opportunities] and that because of a lot of things that happened in the game..." He was in the booth for Seattle's last game prior to last weekend's 2017 season opener, for Seattle's divisional-playoff loss at Atlanta on January 14. On the drive that resulted in the third Blair Walsh field goal last week against Green Bay, the Seahawks went to more of a no-huddle approach and moved the ball consistently and avoided negative plays.
Carroll brought up the injury as a partial explanation for Sherman's surprisingly contentious relations with coaches and media, but instead raised the possibility of a punishment from the National Football League, which later declined to act. But the Seahawks say they know Shanahan's offense can create big plays if they allow themselves to get confused by any of the array of motions and formations the 49ers are sure to throw at them. But after Lynch retired before last season (he since returned with the Raiders this year) Seattle's rushing attack wasn't the same.
The expectation is Thomas Rawls will play after sitting out the opener while recovering from a high ankle sprain.
The Bengals made the first step toward digging out from their historically bad start Friday, firing offensive coordinator Ken Zampese a day after they again failed to get into the end zone.
The Seahawks offensive line has to play better, though. He finished that game and played two weeks later in the Super Bowl. "We'll see whether or not he is going to be available".
Richard wasn't entertaining the thought that Sherman may not be able to play. Lane said officials never told him what he had specifically done saying he only heard the same explanation that was announced. Carroll said Sherman has reminded him of that this week.
"I think you always have to be careful with a hamstring. You can try, but I'm not going to go any farther than that, OK?"
