Scott, the governor, directed two state agencies - the Agency for Health Care Administration and the Department of Children and Families - to probe the situation and dispatch investigators to the nursing home.
The storm's death toll grew to at least 33 people in Florida after a woman died of suspected carbon monoxide poisoning from a generator in Palm Beach County, the Palm Beach Post newspaper reported. Of the eight patient deaths, seven occurred Wednesday.
The overall death toll from Irma climbed to 81 on Wednesday, with several hard-hit Caribbean islands accounting for more than half the fatalities, and officials continued to assess damage inflicted by the second major hurricane to strike the us mainland this year.
Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez said officials were providing ice to 27 senior residence facilities still without power, local media reported.
U.S. President Donald Trump visits hurricane-ravaged Florida on Thursday where police are probing the deaths of eight patients inside a nursing home as Hurricane Irma left millions in the state without power.
Irma, which ranked as one of the most powerful Atlantic storms on record before striking the USA mainland as a Category 4 hurricane on September 10, killed at least 84 people.
Police have opened a criminal investigation. While it's too soon to know for certain how, if, or even where Hurricane Irma might affect the continental United States, Florida officials are urging residents to be prepared after the National Hurricane Center announced there was an "increasing chance" some areas of the state would see at least "some impacts from Irma".
More than half of a large retirement community in Pembroke Pines, Florida, still had no electricity by Wednesday morning, leaving elderly residents stuck in rooms with no access to lifts.
"It may be related to a loss of power in the storm", Mr Sanchez said, adding that officers were checking in on 42 other assisted living facilities and nursing homes throughout the city. Police have said the deaths are under investigation.
Firefighters evacuated 158 people from the nursing home.
Nursing home administrator Jorge Carballo said in a statement that the facility was evacuated Wednesday "due to a prolonged power failure to the transformer which powered the facility's air conditioning system as a result of the hurricane".
Officials initially said as many as 158 people had been moved from the center; on Thursday, police clarified that 145 patients were sent to Memorial Regional Hospital - 141 from the center and four from an adjoining facility.
"More than likely the heat did play a factor" in the conditions of the residents, Hollywood Fire Chief Christopher Pratt said. Numerous patients were transported to Memorial Regional Hospital.
Irma rampaged through the Caribbean, devastating several islands and raking the northern shore of Cuba last week before barreling into the Florida Keys island chain on Sunday with sustained winds of up to 130 miles per hour (215 km per hour).
Authorities were also instructed to carry out precautionary checks on other long-term care facilities in the area in the wake of the incident.
Lawyers for the family of one of the victims are suing the facility, seeking the release of records in hopes of shedding light on what took place Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.
