Bringing mental health to work

Along with line managers to deal with mental health challenges, respondents said workplace training for employees and line managers on how to support those with mental health issues would be helpful.

'Tackling the injustice and reducing the stigma associated with mental health conditions is a priority for me, which is why today I set the goal of providing one million members of the public with basic mental health awareness and first aid'.

Death of loved ones (36 percent), personal ill health (24 percent) and financial worries (27 percent) were cited most often as triggers for mental health problems, but the research also showed that more than a third (35 percent) did not know where to go for help and support.

"The importance of raising awareness and encouraging open, honest conversations about mental health in the workplace can not be understated", said Legal & General chief executive Nigel Wilson, who is holding a mental health forum next week.

In the past year Mental Health First Aid England (MHFA) England has trained a further 65,000 people in Mental Health First Aid. "This creates a culture where people don't feel able to talk about their mental health at work or reach out for support when they need it".

Mary Elliffee, from Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust, said, "I think the evidence is in the stuff that we found. 147 knives being retrieved..."

The study also approached managers and employers to assess their view of mental health in the workplace in contrast to the views of their employees. It emphasises ways to make work more attractive, rather than make unemployment even more punitive. While these rates are relatively stable, the absences from the workplace because of mental illness have been increasing steadily over the past decades.

Numerous staff members who answered the survey say that these problems exist because of understaffing. "We need to educate people and ensure they understand that mental health issues have to be treated, and a specialist has to be consulted for a treatment", he added.

One in five people in the workplace experience a mental health condition, and while many employers are developing policies to support a healthy workforce, there is no shared vision for mental health in the workplace.

By company, Lloyds Banking Group mentioned mental health 13 times in its annual report, followed by Royal Mail which used it ten times, while British Airways' owner International Consolidated Airlines Group (IAG) was among the firms that didn't mention either word.
