Skype for Android adds Cortana support for chat suggestions and more

Microsoft's Digital Assistant to be made available for Skype on iOS and Android

Adding Cortana to Skype could introduce more smartphone users to the assistant. "You can also ask Cortana to check your flight status, give you a stock quote, or suggest the best restaurants in your area", said the Skype Team. But Cortana for Skype wasn't ready at that time. I'm sure this will once again raise questions about privacy, as Cortana will be scanning every message you send on Skype.

This Cortana integration was announced more than a year and a half ago, and it's not totally clear what accounts for the long delay.

You can already count on a dash of AI assistance in some mobile messaging apps, whether it's Google Assistant in Allo or the smart replies you find across iOS. Cortana also suggests smart replies, allowing you to respond to any message quickly and easily-without typing a thing. Cortana will automatically detect when you're talking about something it can help with, and contextual options will be offered just above the chat box next to the blue ring. If you have something on your schedule that you are chatting about with a friend in Skype, Cortana can also recommend setting up a reminder for that event. For example, if your Skype friend asks if you are going to the movies tomorrow, Cortana will pop up some suggested answers to that question, such as "Yes", "No" or something else. Too often, the suggestions interrupt and slow down conversations instead of adding value.

Smart replies on their own are a useful enough feature, as they feel more like an upgraded version of a keyboard app's phrase suggestion, but numerous other A.I. -powered inputs are less than welcome. Cortana is available in Skype and is created to help you with details to support the conversations you have every day. It's only available in the iOS and Android versions of the app.
