For starters, the 2017 Oasis has a larger and improved screen. Amazon has bumped up the resolution slightly to keep the same 300ppi display density as the outgoing Oasis, so graphic novels, illustrations and magazine images look just as sharp as before - only now they're larger. Why, friend, because now you can download and play Audible audiobooks over Bluetooth - result!
The new Kindle Oasis, which tips the scales at 194g, also boasts a "weeks-long" battery life, fast-charging support that sees the device fully juice-up in less than two hours, and either 8GB or 32GB of built-in storage.
The rear of the device is now aluminium, rather than soft-touch plastic, and those pins that connected the charging case have been taken off.
It's the first water-resistant Kindle.
It's not a necessary feature as you won't often be washing off your ereader, but it's an added bonus to know your Kindle will be protected when you're using it next to a pool.
If you already procured a new Kindle a year ago, you're in luck, too.
In profile, this updated Oasis doesn't even look all that different from its predecessor. Finally, you can choose to have more memory, up to 32 GB. Speaking of which, the Oasis's page turning is incredibly fast.
The Oasis is still pricey for an e-reader, but a little less so than before.
The improvements don't end there, though. Weirdly, last year'sOasis lacked this feature despite the fact that the cheaper Voyage had it previously. Screen rotation has also had a noticeable boost, when you flip the ereader around. It has a similar physical design, with one thicker side that tapers down on the other side, for one-handed reading. The interface has also received a few upgrades, with new boldness options, font sizes and accessibility features.
The big new addition for this model, however, is the ability to access and play your Audible Audiobooks.
With Audible built in users can easily switch between reading and listening to a book on Bluetooth-enabled speakers or headphones. Oddly, Amazon has followed in the footsteps of Apple and Google and decided not to equip the device with a 3.5mm headphone jack.
There is more to this than meets the eye, though. Today, a lot of Kindle reading happens in apps on phones and tablets, but the company says that Kindle hardware is still a growing business.
All of this comes with the usual Kindle store and software. Amazon also launched the Echo Show, with a screen, and an Echo Look that gives style suggestions.
Perhaps the most welcome news for Kindle diehards is that the new Oasis is waterproof. And yet Amazon has also reduced the price. The $249.99 second-generation Oasis is also less expensive than its predecessor, which was priced at $289.99 when it launched previous year. At a time when many manufacturers are hiking their prices mercilessly and £700 seems to have become the new normal price for flagship phones, this is welcome news indeed. The $120 Kindle Paperwhite will likely remain the most sensible buy for most people who're still interested in an e-reader in 2017, but it's aging, so the new Oasis could make more sense as a luxury gadget for book lovers who use a Kindle often and just want the nicest thing possible.
