Payton on Peterson trade: 'It's a win-win'
Adrian Peterson is giving all glory to God when it comes to his trade to Arizona - saying Jesus came through for him when he was stuck on the Saints bench. "It was something I was praying about".
"Well, listen, had I known I could draft Kamara and Kamara was gonna be good as a runner and as a receiver. all of those things are fantasy", Payton said.
"And we had a chance to get a draft pick next year", Payton said of the conditional sixth-round pick that Arizona will owe New Orleans if Peterson meets a certain unspecified criteria.
Peterson added that he "wasn't pushing to be moved, but I'd be lying to say I didn't want a change of scenery". I mean, he's a great player. Entering Sunday's game against Detroit in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, Ingram has a team-leading 170 yards on 42 carries, and has caught 15 passes for 125 yards. He was The Associated Press most valuable player in 2012 when he rushed for 2,097 yards and 12 touchdowns, the only non-quarterback to win the award in the last decade.
Peterson is a four-time first-team All-Pro and was a Pro Bowl selection seven times.
Peterson spent just four games with the Saints, but the locker room in New Orleans appreciated his work ethic and his ability as a teammate. "So no matter who is here or wherever I'm at, I'm always going to compete, I'm going to fight and put my best foot forward. He can go. I'm hoping that he goes and proves it in Arizona".
"It was just, you know, it was unfortunate". Turning 30 usually is a death sentence for running backs, but Peterson ran for 1,485 yards and 11 TDs, leading the league in both categories.
"Outside of the role that I played, it was a wonderful experience", he said. Hard worker - that's all I've heard about him. "Anything I needed to know, he was an open book and I was thankful for that".
Said Ingram: "I'm happy for him".
Over the first four games of the year, Peterson has made just a single start, but has more importantly failed to total double-digit carries in any contest.
Notes: Payton said WR Willie Snead, who missed New Orleans previous game with a hamstring injury, is ready to return, but practiced on a limited basis on Wednesday.
