The Kotla T20I will give Nehra a chance to finish his injury-plagued career at his home ground
India host New Zealand in a series of three T20 internationals starting next month, and curiously Nehra chose to hang his boots after the first game.
The 38-year-old Nehra was a surprise pick in the Indian team for the ongoing Twenty20 global series against Australia.
Veteran India pacer Ashish Nehra on Thursday said he will call an end to his cricket career after the first Twenty20 worldwide (T20I) against New Zealand at the Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi on November 1. "But he feels, it's the right time to move on".
Veteran Indian paceman Ashish Nehra has made a decision to retire from global cricket. "Always good to retire when people ask why instead of why not", he continued. "Nehra has requested for one last match at his home ground and wants to go out on a high", the official was quoted as saying by cricketnext. "The game against New Zealand is in Delhi so you can't get better than that when you retire in front of your home crowd", the 38-year-old said at a press conference ahead of the third T20I against Australia here.
Indian media quoted an unnamed Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) official as saying Nehra has informed head coach Ravi Shastri and captain Virat Kohli about his decision. Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar have been in great form in limited over formats of the game recently and that because of that, Nehra has been warming the bench.
"He has played 17 Tests, 120 ODIs and 26 T20Is for India, taking 235 worldwide wickets".
The three-match rubber is tied 1-1 with the decider on Friday (October 13) in Hyderabad.
Overall, Nehra has 44 Test wickets, 157 ODI wickets and 34 scalps in T20Is.
The left-arm seamer is also likely to quit from Indian Premier League (IPL).
Part of the 2011 World Cup winning squad, Nehra injured himself in the semi-finals of the tournament against Pakistan, and was not part of the playing XI in the finals. However, Nehra couldn't take part in the final due to a fractured finger.
