Facebook is making access to VR cheaper with the Oculus Go
12 October 2017, 02:20 | Dale Webster
VR promised us the future. Too bad we're stuck in the present
Oculus, the pioneers in the field of VR, is now owned by Facebook; with its VR team headed by former Google and Xiaomi executive, Hugo Barra.
At the conference, Facebook announced tons of new hardware and future plans that could change the way VR is being perceived by the consumers.
Called "the most accessible VR headset yet" by Zuckerberg, Oculus Go costs $199. It's a standalone mobile headset, which will work with all existing Gear VR titles, that will allow the company to move away from its reliance on smartphone makers like Samsung. Before you needed a computer that had at least $1,000 in parts to run virtual reality software, but now you can buy pre-built systems for less than $600. So, the Oculus Go attends to the shortcoming of other two headsets.
"Though some believe Sony has de-prioritized promoting VR in favor of the standard or Pro PlayStation 4s, it is not worth investing in major marketing campaigns while current supply remains sold out, ' said Canalys Analyst Daniel Matte". This isn't the sort of headset you'll need to power your advanced gaming applications, but it's a better step into integrating VR into a wider spread of people's lives. For $900, or a rather reasonable and oddly specific £685.62, a business gets everything it needs for room-scale VR along with enterprise-grade warranties, a VR commercial license, and a dedicated customer support channel. The Oculus Go can also be worn even when users are wearing glasses. More details soon followed courtesy of Oculus "head of VR" Hugo Barra, including images of a new controller, a "breathable mesh fabric" fit, "significantly reduced [lens] glare", and, perhaps most telling, a switch from an OLED panel to a "fast-switch LCD" one. These posts could be rotated, and interacted without the need to wear headsets, the company said. What makes the Go special is the integrated spatial audio.
Mark Zuckerberg aims to draw a large mass of first-time users to the VR platform with the Oculus Go.
On the one hand, there's new and more affordable virtual reality hardware. And the answer is Oculus Go. While the headset is a standalone product, developers who are making apps and games for the Samsung Gear VR (which uses Oculus tech) will be able to port those apps to the Oculus Go. The company will be shipping first headsets to developers in November.
For the people who aren't in a headset, Facebook chose to drop in 3D Posts, a native media type in News Feed that gives everyone the ability to share content created inside VR.

Hamas, Fatah reach Palestinian reconciliation deal
Israel's enmity with Hamas means greater unity with Fatah is unlikely to help any future efforts for a peace deal with Israel. But last month Hamas agreed to cede powers in Gaza to Mr Abbas' Fatah-led government in a deal mediated by Egypt.
