Google Home Mini Turns Into A 24/7 Spy On One Tech Reporter

Google Home Mini

Google has chose to "permanently remove" the feature that led its smart speaker "Home Mini" accidentally record several times a day without being given any command from the user.

Google responded to the "phantom" touch issue quickly, totally removing "long-press to talk" functionality from all active Home Mini devices. "As before, the best way to control and activate the Google Home Mini is through voice, by saying "Ok Google" or 'Hey Google, ' which is already how most people engage with our Google Home products".

Some Google Home Minis randomly or constantly records sound that are transmitted to Google, leading to accusations of auanuthorisedly prying on users. "Although we only received a few reports of this issue, we want people to have complete peace of mind while using Google Home Mini".

It's not clear whether Google chose to cut the feature because it couldn't find a way to fix it or simply because it didn't want the issue to run and run, and become a PR nightmare. The Home Mini is designed as a miniature version of the Google Home that is tiny enough to sit anywhere in your house and can play music or make calls and other smart functions with the help of Google Assistant.

What's great about Google's swift action is that the company is willing to cripple one of its newest devices to guard the privacy of the user.

Google said it took "user privacy very seriously" in a statement explaining the decision to disable the touch-to-activate function. About 4,000 Home Mini speakers are believed to have been distributed this way. Shortly after the issue was brought to Google's attention on October 7, the company created a support page, rolled out a software update, and removed all correspondence with the device initiated with the top touch between October 4 and October 7. The company also says that the Mini's left and right side can still be tapped to adjust volume. This means pre-ordered devices were not affected. It is expected they will try and push out a full fix for when the product starts shipping on October the 19. It's a good thing this issue was uncovered before the home hubs went on general sale, but does perhaps raise wider concerns around the potential for recording devices in our homes to malfunction, and capture information we may not be happy with sharing.
