Drive to aid Puerto Rico Recovery
President Donald Trump is criticizing hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico and says the government can't keep federal aid there "forever". "Electric and all infrastructure was disaster before hurricanes", Trump wrote in a series of tweets early Thursday.
He continued in a third tweet: "We can not keep FEMA, the Military & the First Responders, who have been wonderful (under the most hard circumstances) in P.R. forever!"
"When things are at their worst, New Yorkers are at their best and this state has proved that once again with the overwhelming generosity that has been shown for our brothers and sisters in Puerto Rico struggling to recovery from the devastation of Hurricane Maria", Cuomo said.
Trump has come under fire for a patronising and callous attitude to the island, and got into a high-profile spat with the capital's mayor, Carmen Yulín Cruz. One-third of people remained without water, including more than half in the island's north and west.
The tribute to Puerto Rican music and dance allowed the western Massachusetts Hispanic community to share their pride and concerns for the people of Puerto Rico.
If Trump abandons Puerto Rico, it will be an impeachable offense. This is essential to meet the IMMEDIATE and long-term recovery needs of 3.4 million US citizens on the island. Schumer tweeted at Trump.
President Trump on Thursday threatened to cease relief efforts in Puerto Rico, where a humanitarian crisis has been underway for the past three weeks.
Last week, Mr Trump suggested the government debt accumulated by Puerto Rico would have to be wiped out to help it recover from the natural disaster. "We want them to be safe, and sound, and secure, and we will be there every day until that happens".
