University of Hawaii's ominous subject line: "In the event of a nuclear attack"
Some in attendance noted the meeting wasn't called because of a specific, immediate threat to Hawaii; however, "recent regional military threats" prompted plans for a proper response when needed.
A University of Hawaii spokesman is apologizing for "needless attention" from an email sent to faculty, staff and students systemwide Monday with the subject line, "In the event of a nuclear attack". But as word got out of the reportedly "secret meeting" on September 19, members of the meeting started informing the public.
The exercises involving the two allies are the latest in a string of joint drills held amid a spate of missile launches - including two over Japan - by nuclear-armed North.
A link also was provided to the state emergency management website. There are people who are concerned.
The sub is armed with 154 Tomahawk missiles that are capable of striking the North's nuclear and missile facilities and Kim Jong-un's presidential palace with pinpoint accuracy.
North Korea's foreign minister said on September 21 that there may be a hydrogen bomb test in the Pacific Ocean, Yonhap news agency reported, after dictator Kim Jong Un vowed to take the "highest-level" action against the United States.
North Korea is about 4,660 miles away from Hawaii.
The email then told recipients to be aware of emergency sirens and to follow instructions on "sheltering in place". Officials believe there would be up to 15,000 casualties.
In September, the Hermit Kingdom successfully conducted its sixth nuclear test, with the regime claiming it detonated its first hydrogen bomb. The sanctions ban all natural gas sales to the North, limit the amount of oil that can be sold to the country, and ban its exports of textile products. There have also reportedly been missile defense tests run by the USA military off the coast of Hawaii and also on the West Coast in the U.S.
