The company, which gathers data on consumers for credit inquiries, has blamed a combination of human and technical error for the massive breach - not the largest on record but potentially the most damaging because of the sensitive financial information on consumers it holds in its databases.

Ars Technica had reported that an independent researcher spotted a credit report assistance page delivering the infected file, which some analysts thought might be tied to an ad network or analytics provider used by the credit reporting agency.

"Our IT and security teams are looking into this matter, and out of an abundance of caution have temporarily taken this page offline", Jefferies said.

The company said the problem is in its credit report assistance link on its website.

Equifax's stock plunged at the news of the latest breach, a Wall Street Journal reporter noted on Twitter.

Equifax announced Thursday that it has taken down one of its customer help pages on reports of another cyber breach, according to Reuters.

What personal information was stolen in the hack? .

Somehow, the worst credit-card-data breach in US history just got worse.

Earlier this month, Equifax said its outside security consultant had concluded an investigation into the breach, which it first detected in July.

Money expert Clark Howard says rather than waiting on Equifax to get itself together, consumers should be proactive and do what they can to protect themselves from identity fraud.
