Prediction of the match Peru – Colombia
All Whites boss Anthony Hudson has pulled no punches on his side's intercontinental 2018 World Cup play-off opponent, saying Peru was his preferred adversary for a ticket to Russian Federation next June. Their captain and all-time leading goalscorer Paolo Guerrero.
He told Panamericana Television: "We were focused on the game and then in the final five minutes the Colombians approached us".
A 1-1 stalemate in the final round of CONMEBOL fixtures proved to be enough to see Colombia through to next summer's showpiece in Russian Federation, while earning Peru a play-off spot.
Of those sides, Peru was the weakest on paper and had the dimmest aura.
Falcaosaid: "We knew what was happening in the other matches, we were playing with [knowledge of] other results and in that moment [I tried] to transmit that". We are at home in the first game and the players really believe.
Despite Hudson's fighting words, the Ricardo Gareca-coached Peru are 12th in the Federation Internationale de Football Association rankings, while New Zealand are ranked 113th. Los Incas will now have to face off against New Zealand over two legs between November 6 and 14.
New Zealand has never beaten South American opposition, with three draws and 11 losses against team from that continent, but Hudson has faith that his team can engineer an upset.
All that stands between them and a chance at glory is New Zealand.
"Obviously, at the end, we knew what the other results were and you tell yourself: "calm it down a bit, we mustn't take any risks".
But a goal with around 10 minutes remaining earned the home team a 1-1 draw and left them in fifth-place, where they had been after the penultimate round of matches.
La Roja were muscled out by Peru on goal difference.
