Features include heated steering wheel to encourage owners to keep the top down even when the temperature drops. It's being offered with a Mercedes-sourced 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine that produces 503bhp and drives the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic gearbox. The trade-off for such a sleek top-down profile is perhaps less of the coupe's contemporary design character - there's no equivalent of the floating roof arches here. Its fabric roof, which is available in three colors including bordeaux red, black silver, and grey silver, takes just 14 seconds to lower and 16 seconds to close. A neat touch is the new veneer panels on the seat backs.
Aston Martin President and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Andy Palmer said, "For many of our customers, indeed many generations of Aston Martin customer, the Volante has always offered something very special: a unique combination of elegant style, innate sporting ability and sensory engagement that lifts it above other open-top cars".
The all-new 8-layer hood is created to insulate the occupants from the extremes of weather and wind noise, taking just 14 seconds to lower and 16 to close. It can be operated remotely using the key, or while on the move at speeds of up to 31 miles per hour with a 31 mph headwind, Aston Martin says. But overall it's a svelte transition from coupe to convertible with, as expected, handsome attention to detail. Being based on the coupe's aluminum platform, the DB11 Volante is lighter and more rigid than the outgoing DB9 Volante, and also benefits from a 20 percent gain in trunk volume. The convertible roof also features acoustic and insulation materials and new eight-layer cossets to protect occupants from extreme weather and drown out wind noise.
"The challenge of creating a convertible auto is retaining structural and dynamic integrity", said Max Szwaj, Aston Martin Chief Technical Officer.
