Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones: Players Who Protest During Anthem Won't Play

The two teams renew one of the league's most storied and historic rivalries. The Packers defeated the Cowboys in a divisional playoff game last season

Jerry Jones-the owner of the Dallas Cowboys, the inventor of the bullshit but diabolically ingenious national anthem protest rebranding scheme, and the odds-on favorite to portray Dobby the House Elf's great-grandfather in any future Harry Potter sequels-is done pretending.

Jones' comments, the strongest made on the anthem controversy, came after he was asked about Vice President Mike Pence leaving the game in Indianapolis early after several San Francisco 49ers players took a knee during the national anthem. Jones then stood and linked arms with them during the anthem.

"If there is anything that is disrespectful to the flag then we will not play", Jones said, according to the Dallas Morning News".

Jones wasn't the only owner who suddenly didn't appear to be so united with his players.

Jones said he wasn't aware of whether any of his players had raised a fist at the end of the anthem before the Green Bay game. No longer does he feel the need to feign support for the social and political underpinnings of the Colin Kaepernick-inspired anthem protests going around the NFL.

Jones said he spoke with Trump after that demonstration and "He shared with me that there'd been a rule on the books in our game operations ... that's been there for years ... That's what we played, and it got us".

"Our vice president, if in his opinion, there's disrespect of the flag then he should express himself however he wants to say".

Afterwards, Pence tweeted that he wouldn't "dignify any event that disrespects our soldiers, our Flag or our National Anthem".

Jones said a phone conversation with Trump after the display in Arizona included Trump telling him there was a rule on the books.

Now one owner - who happens to be friends with Trump - has publicly declared that his team's players are banned from protesting during the anthem.

"I look forward to the day when everyone in management can unite and truly embrace and articulate what the flag stands for, liberty and justice for all, instead of some of them just talking about standing", Smith said Monday, per the Associated Press' Schuyler Dixon (via the Washington Post).

Miami Dolphins players were forced by the team owner to stand before Sunday's game when a military band played the national anthem. "That is what makes us the land of the free and home of the fearless".
