Federation Internationale de Football Association suspends Pakistan for third-party interference
13 October 2017, 04:57 | Dale Webster
The suspension will be lifted once PFF offices and access to PFF accounts are returned to PFF
FIFA said on Wednesday it was banning the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF), barring the country's national and club teams from competing in worldwide competition with immediate effect.
In a statement, world football's governing body said it had suspended the PFF in accordance with the decision of the Bureau of the FIFA Council dated Tuesday.
A high court-appointed body took over the control of PFF after an allegation of vote rigging were levelled against Faisal Saleh Hayat who was elected federation's president in 2015.
However, in a bid to fix the issue, a high court-appointed administrator took over the running of the PFF - but that move came in violation of Federation Internationale de Football Association statutes regarding political interference.
The men's national team has not played a game since 2015, which has seen it slump to an all-time FIFA ranking of 200 and there is no professional football league.
The ban cuts off funding from Zurich, and bars national and club teams and officials from global games and meetings.
In addition, members and officials from the Pakistani organisation won't have access to development grants or training courses issued by FIFA and Asian Football Confederation (AFC). In a statement sent to Reuters, Shahid Khokhar, an ally of Hayat, lay the blame for PFF's trouble at the feet of Muhammad Safdar, senior PML-N lawmaker and the son-in-law of recently ousted Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
"The suspension has put our footballers' future in danger. It [FIFA] had told us it would suspend us if the political interference did not end", Hayat told Geo News Pakistan.
Minister for Inter-Provincial Coordination Riaz Hussain Pirzada on Thursday presided over a meeting in Islamabad to contemplate on legal aspects of FIFA's action against Pakistan Football Federation. Due to his negligence and self-styled policies, Pakistan sports and athletes have been suffering a lot while football players will further suffer a lot due to this FIFA ban.
