Vegas home opener a sombre tribute to Oct. 1 victims, first responders

Vegas Golden Knights will honor #VegasStrong for home opener

With the win, the Knights became the first expansion team to start 3-0 and they now sit alone on top of the Pacific Division to open their seven-game homestand.

"To the families and friends of the victims, we'll do everything we can to help you and our city heal".

The explanation is that I love sports, don't have a hockey team, and visit Las Vegas enough to apparently pass the test at the Golden Knights adoption center.

Certainly, there will be great joy as Las Vegas and all of Southern Nevada celebrates the christening of its first major league professional sports franchise.

"Needless to say it's not going to be a typical opener", Golden Knights general manager George McPhee said before the game, according to the Las Vegas Sun's Jesse Granger. They gave this community an awesome display, everything from a classy pregame production to a well-played hockey game.

The fans will be watching a first-place team on its home ice.

With the exception of Engelland, who has lived here since his days with the minor league Las Vegas Wranglers, all of the players have been Las Vegans for just a few weeks. The Knights have earned a couple of 2-1 wins, both on third period comebacks, one of which had to be settled in overtime.

Piazza hit a home run into the cold NY night at Shea Stadium in the Mets' first home game after the September 11 terrorist attacks for a late-game victory. "Obviously, the city is still healing from the tragedy, and as players we're aware of that". The Golden Knights are leaning on people like me to buy merchandise, get emotionally invested, and follow the team no matter how long it takes for them to get good. "We're playing for our city, for the tragedy that happened, for all the people that were here tonight and were affected by the tragedy".

Goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, who will start Tuesday, said of the unique circumstances surrounding the home opener: "I think we're all excited to be home and have the chance to play in front of our fans". "We said we wanted to roll it up again today and get a big win and go home a happy team, and we did that".

Engelland said: "We've never had an experience like this".

It was Bettman who pushed hard to approve granting Knights owner Bill Foley his franchise.
