Target has only been available through Google Express in New York City and California before now, so today's announcement marks a major expansion and helps to fill out Google's service in a big way. It's worth looking forward to, as it means you'll be able to take advantage of Target REDcard perks like 5% off all orders, free shipping, and, eventually, an option to pick up items you ordered through Google Assistant at a physical Target store within two hours of ordering. With the Google Home device, Google represents these retailers best shots' at finding a way into consumers' homes in a market where Amazon Alexa-powered smart speakers now dominate.
Besides, Google Assistant will soon be gaining functionality for online shopping, now shopping via Google Home and Assistant is only possible on Android TV.
Target Corporation (NYSE:TGT) announced today that it will roll out its Google Express partnership services nationwide next year.
Like many retailers, Target has been offering more shopping options.
Target announced today an expanded partnership with Google that, among other things, will now allow consumers to shop Target across the US via Google Express, including by voice.
"We have lots of different choices of how they buy from us", said Mike McNamara, Target's chief information and digital officer.
The latest beta version of the Google app has been released and gives us a glimpse into a few new features the company is developing for Assistant.
Target customers will also be able to opt in to receive personalized recommendations and a quick re-order experience based on past Target purchases: so if you want more LaCroix sparkling water or Archer Farms trail mix, your Google Assistant will already know which size and variety you bought from Target last time. That includes the core Echo, as well as the less expensive and smaller Echo Dot and the portable Amazon Tap.
You now can't tie your Target account to Google Express, but Target says that will be an option in 2018. The company has been experimenting with this using Google Home, but you can only do so much blind shopping with your voice.
