Michigan mom jailed for not vaccinating son loses primary custody

Rebecca Bredow

A MI mother has lost primary custody of her child after she was jailed for five days for not following through on an agreement to vaccinate her 9-year-old son.

Rebecca Bredow lost primary custody of the boy Wednesday. She thought she would be reunited with her son, but he remained with his father. "It's been a rough few days to say the least".

Mr Horne was granted joint custody of the boy on Ms Bredow's release earlier this week.

Her crime? Not obeying a court order to vaccinate her child.

The 40-year-old mother said, "It was the worst five days of my life pretty much except for the fact that I just found out that he was vaccinated and I'm not going to get him back today". While his ex-wife was in jail, he followed the court order and had his son receive the first round of vaccines. After she defied the judge's order, she served a five-day jail term, according to U.S.A. Today.

Bredow was sentenced October 4 to seven days in county jail.

Parents in MI are legally allowed to skip or delay their children's vaccinations due to personal beliefs, according to the BBC. Bredow's attorney, Steven Vitale, said he would object to the change within the 21-day deadline set by the judge. He received four immunizations on Monday. He said of his client, "She's devastated" but does not regret her decision to not vaccinate.

"Never in a million years did I ever think that I would end up in jail standing up to try to protect my kids, and standing up for my beliefs", Bredow told ABC.

Under state law, parents can chose whether to vaccinate their children but Bredow fell foul because she agreed to an immunisation schedule with her ex-husband, James Horne, in court proceedings in November 2016.
