No decision on Sabarimala Temple Entry for women, referred to constitution bench

Supreme Court to deliver verdict on women entering Kerala's Sabarimala temple today

I am sure the judgement will also be very positive and landmark."Another women right activist Saswati Ghosh also pinned her faith on the apex court's decision."I hope it will allow women to enter the temple otherwise we can not say it is secular country , As Reported By Siyasat".

A plea filed by the Young Lawyers Association calls the temple's custom discriminatory and has sought the entry of all women and girls in the Sabarimala temple.

The Supreme Court on Friday referred the pleas on allowing women - aged between 10 to 50 years -to enter into Kerala's Sabarimala temple to a constitutional bench.

The Constitution Bench will now be looking into several women rights claims regarding the matter, especially the women's fundamental right of freedom to pray at their place of choice.

Sabarimala, one of Kerala's most renowned temples which has Lord Ayappa as the presiding deity, does not allow menstruating women to enter the temple. The Sabarimala temple restricts women aged between 10 to 50 years from taking the journey to Sabarimala - which implies women are prohibited from making the hard trek to the place of worship.

In February, the apex court had reserved its order on referring the case to a constitution bench, Deccan Chronicle reported. This violates the rights of the women. "Every right needs to be balanced but every balancing has its own limitations..."

In 2007, the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government had taken a progressive stand by favouring women's entry into the temple, which was later overturned by the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) dispensation.

Senior counsel Jaideep Gupta had told the court that the Kerala government "supports the proposition that women of any age group should be permitted to enter the Sabarimala temple".

The UDF government had taken a view that they were against the entry of women of the age group of 10-to-50 years as such a practice was being followed since time immemorial.
