When one or more officers got out of the vehicle, a gunman opened fire, striking one officer "several times", and causing the officer to collapse at the scene, Harrison said. Harrison didn't immediately elaborate on what they observed.
NBC affiliate WDSU is reporting that a suspect shot at police officers who were on routine patrol.
The officer was taken by EMS to University Medical Center, where Harrison said doctors pronounced the officer dead.
The suspect, who is under arrest, was transferred to a nearby hospital and is receiving treatment for multiple gunshot wounds, according to police.
