Paris To Drop All ICE Cars By 2030

According to the CBC, city officials said it was introducing a "feasible and realistic" goal of phasing out of gas vehicles instead of calling the move a "ban" on such cars.

Hidalgo has angered many Parisians with her efforts to make Paris a greener city, notably by adding cycling paths that have slowed vehicle traffic along the Seine River. "We're planning to press ahead with the end of fossil-based vehicles because quite simply we're running out of time".

"This is about planning for the long term with a strategy that will reduce greenhouse gases", said Christophe Najdovski, an official responsible for transport policy at the office of Mayor Anne Hidalgo.

Paris City Hall said in a statement France had already set a target date of 2040 for an end to cars dependent on fossil fuels and that this required speedier phase-outs in large cities.

The climate plan will be submitted to the Council of Paris for a vote in November.

Plans to phase out internal combustion vehicles by foreign cities and countries have recently prompted calls for similar action in the U.S.; California governor Jerry Brown has called for the state to phase out sales of gas- and diesel-engined cars before the 2040 targets announced by France and the United Kingdom, citing China's commitment to bring about the same ban far sooner.

It also touted its investments in public transit and bike lanes.

On the heels of France and the United Kingdom announcing plans to phase out sales of combustion-engined cars by 2040, the state of California is mulling a similar move much earlier than the 2040 target date, . By offering alternatives, we can do without a personal auto.

On Oct. 1, the city held "a day without cars", with the intention of making Paris "less polluted, more pleasant and more peaceful".

"Sensitizing residents to the need to modify their behavior towards the vehicle was part of the objectives of this day", the mayor's office said in a statement, adding that it was also meant to be a symbol "that cities can and must invent concrete solutions to fight air pollution caused by traffic".
