The trailer for Spike Lee's She's Gotta Have It Netflix series hints at a vibrant remake
Most people feel like it's better to not touch a classic piece of cinema or television with a remake, but what if the creator of that classic cinema wants to expand its world? Lee's debut independent film She's Gotta Have It is now a Netflix Original series coming out on Thanksgiving. The movie is being turned into a TV series on Netflix, which Lee will also direct (for all 10 episodes).
The official trailer kicks off with archival footage of Spike in the original as Mars Blackmon before he met DeWanda Wise, who is the new Nola Darling. Nola's three Lovers: Greer Childs played by Cleo Anthony (Divergent), Jamie Overstreet played by Lyriq Bent (The Book of Negroes), and Mars Blackmon played by Hamilton alum Anthony Ramos are also introduced. An update on Spike's groundbreaking film, She's Gotta Have It, Lee brings back the character of Nola Darling, set in current day life. She declares herself a "sex positive, polyamorous, pansexual" who has never been concerned with the idea monogamy.
The new series stars newcomer DeWanda Wise as Nola Darling, a progressive and outspoken woman in her late 20s navigating the choppy waters of relationship-building and working toward a career. Tonya Lewis Lee is Executive Producer. The film signaled a change of how African Americans are portrayed in movies. The She's Gotta Have It series is on the way, and the full trailer is now online.
